Health monitoring cat litter: how it works and which type to choose
Health monitoring cat litter contains an indicator that changes color when your cat's urine pH — and in some brands, blood — moves outside the normal range. It doesn't diagnose anything, but it lets you notice a change early and bring it to your vet.

What health monitoring cat litter does
Your cat visits the litter box every day, without fail. A health monitoring litter turns those visits into a quick visual check: you scoop as usual and glance at the color.
Most of these litters read urine pH — how acidic or alkaline the urine is. A healthy cat's urine usually sits around pH 6.0 to 7.5. Some brands add a second indicator that reacts to blood in the urine.
Cats are good at hiding discomfort, and urinary trouble is one of the most common reasons they end up at the vet. A color you can see every morning gives you a reason to look closer before the obvious signs appear.
How the color change works
The indicator is a compound that changes color at specific pH levels. When urine is in the normal range, the litter stays its base color. When the urine is more acidic or more alkaline than usual, the indicator shifts.
On TellTail, the scale reads like this:
| Urine pH | TellTail color | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| About 4 | Deep red | Strongly acidic |
| About 5 | Orange | Acidic |
| About 6–7 | Natural beige (no change) | Normal range |
| About 8 | Soft green | Alkaline |
| About 9 | Deep green | Strongly alkaline |
TellTail holds its beige across the comfortable middle and only begins to shift below about pH 5.3 or above about 7.7. Other brands use different colors for the same readings — see the color chart.
The three types of health monitoring litter
| Type | Examples | How the color shows | Clumping | Flushing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silica gel crystals | PrettyLitter, Tidy Cats Tidy Care Alert | The crystals change color | Original formulas are non-clumping; PrettyLitter also sells a clumping version | Not designed for flushing |
| Clay with indicator granules | Fresh Step Clumping Health Monitoring | Indicator granules sprinkled on top of clay | Yes | Brand says do not flush |
| Plant-based tofu with an indicator | TellTail | The litter itself changes color | Yes, firm clumps | TellTail is Flushable\* |
Why clumping matters for reading the color
With non-clumping crystals, urine soaks into the crystals and spreads. Yesterday's color and today's can sit side by side.
In a clumping litter, each visit forms its own clump. You scoop it, you see the color, and the next clump is a fresh reading. That makes the signal easier to read day to day, especially if you want to spot a pattern.
What a color change does — and doesn't — tell you
A color change means the urine pH has moved. It doesn't tell you why. Diet, water intake and time since the last meal all move pH, and so does a clump that has been sitting for hours.
What matters is the pattern. One green clump after dinner is usually nothing. The same off-color reading on fresh morning clumps over several days is worth a conversation with your vet.
One thing has nothing to do with color: a cat straining in the box and passing little or no urine — especially a male cat — needs a vet the same day.
How to choose
- You want a plant-based litter you can flush: choose a tofu litter with a pH indicator.
- You specifically want a blood indicator: choose a crystal or clay product that includes one. TellTail reads pH only.
- Your cat is used to crystals and you don't want to change texture: stay with a crystal formula.
- You have several cats: any type works, but remember you won't always know whose clump you're reading.
TellTail at a glance
TellTail is a health monitoring cat litter made from tofu. It is made mainly from plant fibers and plant starch, with a natural mineral binder and a food-grade pH indicator. No silica gel crystals.
It stays beige in the normal range, forms firm clumps, pours with low dust, is lightly scented, works for kittens from 12 weeks and in multi-cat homes, and is Flushable\*. It ships with Prime from Amazon.
Flushable* — TellTail’s plant-based clumps break down in water, so flush the clumps a little at a time. Place cat droppings in the trash, not the toilet. Not recommended for septic systems or older / low-flow plumbing.
