Can the color change if my cat is healthy?
Yes. Urine drifts alkaline for a few hours after a big meal, and a clump left sitting for hours keeps drifting, so an evening or stale clump can read green for ordinary reasons.
Common harmless reasons
- After a meal. Urine runs more alkaline for a few hours after eating.
- An old clump. A clump that sat in the box all day keeps drifting upward.
- A urinary diet. Many urinary and struvite-control foods acidify urine on purpose, which can show as orange. If your cat is on one, ask your vet whether that's expected.
- Another cat. In a multi-cat home you may be reading someone else's clump.
How to get an honest reading
Check a fresh clump in the morning, before breakfast. If it's beige, the earlier color was most likely the meal or the wait.
One off reading is rarely meaningful. The same color on fresh morning clumps over several days is worth a call to your vet.
